But being surrounded by something remarkable doesn’t always mean a young child knows what to notice, what to ask, or how to make sense of it.

Nahlo creates developmentally appropriate literacy resources that help children look closely, participate meaningfully, and carry the experience with them.

Does literacy actually matter in my setting?

Yes. Because literacy is one of the ways children make meaning from an experience.

Literacy in a park, museum, wildlife center, or community program doesn’t have to mean sitting down to complete a worksheet. It can look like:

  • Finding the words to describe what they notice
  • Connecting a new word to something they can see or touch
  • Asking a question about what is happening
  • Following a sequence or anticipating what comes next
  • Drawing and labeling a discovery
  • Recording something they want to remember
  • Retelling the experience later

These small acts help children move from simply being present to actively participating.

A child may stand beneath a rocket, watch a sea turtle, peer into a pond, or walk through a historic place. The experience provides the wonder. Literacy helps the child understand it, talk about it, and carry it forward.

Literacy Through Exploration™ connects foundational reading and writing development with firsthand experience.

Nahlo resources are created by an experienced reading educator and informed by evidence-based literacy instruction, including the Science of Reading and Orton-Gillingham principles. Activities are intentionally concise, developmentally appropriate, and designed to welcome emerging readers and writers.

Children aren’t completing an assignment about something chosen for them.

They’re learning how reading, writing, drawing, and language can help them understand something they genuinely want to know.

Partnerships designed around your place, program, or event

Nahlo Snapshot

A short, welcoming activity resource for festivals, public programs, launches, and high-traffic events. Snapshots invite children to notice, record, and remember without requiring significant staff facilitation.

Nahlo On the Go

A customized 8-12 page mini journal that helps young children explore a specific place or experience. Each edition combines observation, early literacy, drawing, writing, and reflection in a compact format families can use independently and save for years to come.

Program and event collaborations

A broader experience combining a Nahlo resource with family engagement, documentation, take-home materials, or an on-site activation.

Every collaboration is shaped around the real experience. Nahlo doesn’t replace the expertise, interpretation, or programming your organization already provides. We help make it more accessible to younger visitors.

We don’t offer literacy programming. Are we still a good fit?

Yes. Your organization brings the place, program, subject expertise, or experience. Nahlo applies early-literacy research to create an accessible way for young children to participate. You do not need an existing literacy program to partner with us.
Have you used this with actual kids?

Nahlo resources are developed and tested alongside children in parks, wildlife centers, museums, major attractions, and ordinary family trips.

That fieldwork has reinforced a few essential principles:

  • Hands-on participation is more powerful than passive observation.
  • Young children need fewer facts and clearer entry points.
  • A resource should follow the experience, not dictate it.
  • Children will often find meaningful uses adults didn’t anticipate.
  • The best activities leave room for noticing, conversation, and memory.
